AFC Totton V Poole Town
The Stags round off their Pre-Season campaign with a home match against Tommy Killick’s Poole Town tomorrow (3pm).
Many local football fans will remember when Poole Town used to play at the Poole Stadium, which is where the Speedway and Greyhound racing is held. However, they were forced out of the Poole stadium in 1994 and left homeless. The Dolphins had no choice but to drop from the Southern League and into Hampshire League Division One, where they found a temporary home at Holt United. Poole endured some tough years. However, they gradually fought back, eventually securing themselves a home at Tatnum (The Black Gold Stadium) and with their Size-able fan base they climbed back up through the Divisions, reaching the National League (South) in 2015/16. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, their stay at step two only lasted two years meaning they now play in Southern Premier (South). I am sure the Dorset club will be keen on returning to the National League (South) this term. Last season Tommy Killicks side were in 9th place when the season was cut short.
There are a few AFC Totton connections in the Poole Town ranks, with former Stags centre half Jamie Whisken having been at Tatnum since departing the then Testwood Stadium in 2013. Another familiar face in the Dolphins ranks is striker Tony Lee, who of course spent two spells at the Snows Stadium, one brief spell under Steve Hollick and one under Louis Langdown. Among Tommy Killick’s coaching staff is former Totton striker Richard Gillespie who spent the 2012/13 season with us under Steve Riley. Gillespie was a prolific striker in his day.
