AFC Totton vs Thatcham Town – Preview

Thatcham Town v AFC Totton preview

AFC Totton travel to the Stacatruc stadium to face Thatcham Town on Saturday afternoon (3pm) for their latest Southern League encounter. The Stags will be in a buoyant mood following their win at Basingstoke Town last weekend, The 2nd v 1st encounter promised goals and it delivered, with the Stags coming out on the right side of a 3-2 scoreline! In truth Glenn Howes side should’ve won by a bigger margin after they missed some decent chances in the 2nd half. The win kept the Stags top of the table until Tuesday evening when Cirencester leapfrogged them after a 3-0 home win over Willand Rovers.

Saturdays opponents ‘Thatcham Town’ are currently 15th in Division One South, after a mixed start to the campaign. The Kingfishers have WON 1 DRAWN 3 and LOST 2 of their six games. Jamie Leacocks side won for the 1st time this season, when thy beat Melksham Town 3-0 at the Stacatruc Stadium last saturday.

When doing these previews I always look to see if there are any players who have played for both clubs and there is one Thatcham player who some Totton fans may remember. From the 2013/14 season, that player is Jamal Branker. At the time Jamal came to the Stags on loan from Southampton. Branker played nine games for Totton scoring one goal and that goal came in a 3-2 defeat at Truro City.

The Stags record against Thatcham Town goes back many years, both sides were in the Wessex League together for a long time. Our Southern League record against Thatcham reads…….

P9 W6 D0 L3 F20 A17. Our Southern League record against them was 100% until 2 years ago, but the Stags suffered three hefty defeats in a row against a good Thatcham side managed by Danny Robinson, Danny left to manage National League South Hungerford Town last May, and a number of that Thatcham side followed Danny to Bullpit Lane. Fortunately we only played the Kingfishers once last season and that was at the Snows stadium when the Stags lost 6-0…….ouch!!! This was a real low point for me personally, in fact this was the heaviest home defeat I have seen in my time involved with the club. Lets hope this current AFC Totton side can go some way towards erasing that game with the Kingfishers from my memory!
