AFC Totton vs Willand Rovers
Willand Rovers Preview
The Stags travel to Central Devon on Wednesday evening to face Willand Rovers (7.30pm). This is the Stags 1st Southern League Div One (South) fixture on the Road in 2020-21, and it will be Totton’s 1st ever visit to the Stan Robinson Stadium. The Stags were scheduled to head there towards the end of last season, but the abandonment of the 2019-20 season saw that fixture knocked on the head.
The sides did meet in the Southern league early last season at the Snows stadium. The Stags won the fixture 1-0 thanks to a goal from Pip Nolan. My memory of that night was the amount of chances there were in the game, how it finished 1-0 I will never know. Rovers looked a decent outfit that evening and had a fair share of the chances.
Rovers, also known as the Devon-All-Whites, were promoted to the Southern League in the 2018-19 season, after they won the Western League Premier Division title. When last season was halted Rovers were in 14th place in the Southern League Div One table, having won 10 drawn 2 and lost 12 of the 24 games they had played.
Rovers are managed by Russell Jee and David Steele and I am sure they will be looking to improve further this season. Rovers have played two League games so far. They were beaten 1-0 at Highworth Town on the opening day, but last Saturday they beat Larkhall Athletic 2-0 at home. Larkhall are a decent outfit, so this shows that Rovers are a very capable side. Willand have played a couple of games in the FA Cup this season too, they beat Bridport Town 2-1 at the Stan Robinson Stadium in the Extra Preliminary Round, but they were edged out 1-0 by Shepton Mallet in the Preliminary Round.
From what I can see Willand have made at least two additions to last seasons squad. They have added Central midfielder Callum Eastwood and winger Bailey Kempster, both came in on loan from Weston Super Mare.
