Bishops Cleeve 1 AFC Totton 3 – Match Report

STAGS PICK UP FIRST AWAY VICTORY WITH SOLID 3-1 WIN

Bishops Cleeve 1-3 AFC Totton
(Feeney 14, Mott 57, Sherborne 63)

Attendance – 68 (approx. 10 away)

The Stags came into this game on the back of an opening day victory at the TBC Stadium against Barnstaple. Manager Louis Langdown named an unchanged XI from the weekend and also included new signing Oliver Davis, signed this week from Poole Town but was still missing Dave Allen who has been unavailable.

Totton were the quickest out of the blocks and had the first real attacks of the first half. Craig Feeney had the first sniff at goal but Lewis Clayton in the hosts goal was able to deal with the danger. Toby Adekunle had the next effort on goal, his curled attempt was deflected behind for a corner which Jack Masterton took and Stuart Mott headed wide.

The Stags eventually took the lead after 14 minutes. Curtis Young crossed from the right hand side for Nathaniel Sherborne, who was able to hook the ball back across goal towards Craig FEENEY who was on hand to smash home from a yard or two out.

Bishops Cleeve tried to respond, but were unable to really test Shane Murphy in goal for Totton. As half time approached, the hosts best opportunity fell to Elliot Kennedy who broke free of the defence, following a route one style clearance by Clayton, but could only put his effort high and wide of the goal. HT 0-1

Cleeve started the second period the brighter of the two sides and indeed drew themselves level 8 minutes after the break. After some indecision in The Stags defence, substitute Jacob SLOGGETT found himself in on goal and he slotted his finish in off the post and beyond Murphy to equalize.

However, the hosts were only level for 4 minutes as Totton restored their lead. After some great work from Toby Adekunle down the left wing to leave Logan Stoddart on his heels, a peach of a delivery found Stuart MOTT, who had beaten the offside trap and was left free to head home into the bottom corner of the net.

Another 6 minutes later, The Stags extended their lead and effectively put the game to bed. Craig Feeney chased down a ball into the right hand side of the area while holding off a challenge on his way, before squaring the ball towards Nathaniel SHERBORNE who showed great anticipation to sweep the ball goalwards, after it had appeared that Aaron Drake would get to the ball first.

The Sherborne-Feeney combination almost came into fruition once more as the latter headed wide the formers cross. But the writing was perhaps on the wall for the hosts when another substitute Shane Bumphrey found himself in on goal, only for Mott to put in a superb challenge to stop any shot getting away and quell the attack as a whole.

Cleeve were also forced to finish the game with 10 men as defender Aaron Drake was stretchered off after clattering into the advertising boards, under pressure from Feeney. The final opportunity of the game fell The Stags’ way. After some great link up play between Charlie Gunson and Oliver Davis, Gunson cut inside and fired a shot at goal but Clayton was able to gather the ball with ease. FT 1-3

So it’s 2 wins from 2 for The Stags and a great way to start off the new season. As early as it is in the campaign, I’m sure I’ll be forgiven for mentioning the fact that Totton are top of the league… for now! More importantly, there is a feel good factor building around the club and long may it continue. Up next is a break from the league as Totton travel to take on Fleet Town (Saturday 19th August – 3pm) in the F.A Cup.
