AFC Totton 1 Taunton Town 2

AFC Totton were looking to bounce back from last week’s 4-0 defeat at Cinderford. Taunton Town had been having a great start to the season until recently, but they had suffered two defeats on the spin prior to yesterday’s clash.

Stags boss Steve Riley was without James Jennings, Joe Maxwell and Andrew Bridge for the game. Nathaniel Sherborne returned to the side after missing last week’s defeat and Rob Flooks returned after serving his one match suspension.

The game had a slow start, without much in the way of goalmouth incident, Taunton were looking as if they were up for the contest and it was they who created the 1st chance after 6 minutes.

Craig Herrod, got to the by-line down the Taunton left, before putting over a dangerous cross that found the unmarked Rodney Marsh at the back of the 6 yard box. Marsh then hit a left footed shot back across goal and just wide of the far post.

Totton’s 1st chance came, when a Gilbert corner was met by the head of Rob Flooks, Flook’s downward header fell to the feet of Zac Mouland, who hooked wide from close range.

Taunton then went back on the attack and Craig Herrod, on the left, found Rodney Marsh, just inside the box, and Marsh tried a shot that was deflected just wide.

Totton retaliated again when Rob Flooks headed over from a Liam Gilbert corner.

In the 33rd minute Taunton took the lead when a straight forward pass by Rodney Marsh caught the Stags defence flat footed, Steve Murray anticipated the pass from Marsh, and he found himself in acres of space to take the ball wide of Steve Mowthorpe and put the Peacocks 1-0 up, without a Stags defender in sight!

Just before half time Zac Mouland was on the left hand side of the box when he received a ball from the right, Zac then had a shot, which was deflected wide of the far post.

Half time…… Stags 0 Taunton 1

In the 2nd half, Taunton continued their physical approach to the game, and after 57 minutes a bad tackle on Stags striker Nathaniel Sherborne saw the offender ‘Jamie Short’ receive a deserved red card.

Totton had been struggling to assert themselves on the game and the home crowd were getting a little frustrated at times, as the Stags were failing to create anything against the 10 men.

Then on 66 minutes Totton almost pulled themselves level when Kyle O’Brien’s close range effort was saved by Peacocks keeper Joe Perry, the ball then ran loose to Zac Mouland who had a shot at goal and the ball was cleared off of the line by Taunton’s captain Owen Irish.

The effort by Kyle O’Brien was the first time that Taunton’s keeper Joe Perry had had to make a save in the entire game. Having said that, Stags keeper Steve Mowthorpe also had little to do, in truth.

On 74 minutes Totton centre half Rob Flooks came up field for a free kick that had been awarded for a foul on Jamie Bullpitt. The free kick was about 18 yards in from the goal line and a few yards in from the touchline. Gilbert floated over a superb ball which, Rob FLOOKS met with a powerful glancing header sending it into the net, to level the game up at 1-1.

The hope was that Totton would now awaken from their slumber and kick on and win the game, but the truth is that the 10 men of Taunton were pretty comfortable as the Stags failed to deal with the physicality of Taunton’s play.

Totton didn’t really create another chance of note and the danger was that Taunton could end up stealing the points, and this is exactly what ended up happening.

With the 90 minutes up Taunton were awarded a free kick on the right, Ben Kirk took the free kick and an unmarked Jamie Price powered a header into the net to earn the visitors the three points.

The Stags now have to lift themselves for Tuesday’s derby game at Bashley (7.45pm)
