Match Report: U18’s bow out of FA Youth Cup at Miller Park
The FA Youth Cup – 2nd Round Qualifying
Thursday 4th October 7:30pm
Totton & Eling 3 – 1 AFC Totton
A woefully inept performance saw the young Stags crash out of the FA Youth Cup last night against near neighbours Totton & Eling.
T&E dominated the early stages of the game and twice came close to scoring in the opening 5 minutes. On both occasions, keeper Mitchell Jackson saved the young Stags with smart saves. T&E continued to dominate and after 21 minutes took the lead with a good flowing move down the right. From 25 yards out, a diagonal ball into the box was volleyed home from 12 yards.
It took the young Stags almost 30 minutes to get the ball down and play a spell of passing football. Matt Wotton had a shot blocked as he cut in from the left side of the box. Despite being outplayed for most of the first half, the young Stags went into the break still in the match.
Half Time: Totton & Eling 1-0 AFC Totton
The young Stags began the 2nd half positively and came close to equalising on 47 minutes. A James Matthews corner found Josh Carey on the 6-yard box, but his header was scrambled off the line and cleared. On 53 minutes, the young Stags were awarded a free kick when Harry Edmondson was brought down just outside the penalty area. Sam Muddiman drove the resulting kick over the bar.
After 57 minutes T&E increased their lead from the penalty spot, after Sam Muddiman had committed a foul inside the box.
The T&E defence were soaking up the long balls forward and using the ball to good effect. With 70 minutes gone, it was no surprise when they made it 3-0, as they carved the Stags apart with an attack down the left. With several T&E players unmarked inside the penalty area, the ball across was coolly finished off from just 10 yards out.
On 82 minutes the young Stags scored a consolation goal when a long ball was flicked on by Josh Carey. Matt Wotton ran on and from the edge of the box, knocked the ball over the advancing keeper.
The young Stags need to go back to the drawing board on how they play, as they quickly return to league action on Sunday afternoon with an away trip to Sholing.
