AFC Totton 0 Thatcham Town 3

I do not intend to go into much detail about what was a bit of a shocker at The Testwood Community Stadium this afternoon. Watched by a 285 crowd on a sun drenched afternoon, the Stags produced what was the worst performance I have seen from them this season.

Louis Langdown was not helped by the fact he was missing Eddie Perrett, Callum Chugg, Craig Feeney as well as the suspended Jack Smith. When you have a small squad you cannot afford to be missing quality players like that and expect it not to affect you.

James Matthews was handed his 1st senior start for the club and assistant boss Adam Wilde had to start his 1st game of the season at left back, Robin Nicholls was having to step into an unfamiliar role at centre half. The Totton bench consisted of Jason Brookes, Papa, Charlie Hitchings and Matt Wotton.

As for the game itself the 1st meaningful action saw Dave Allen head into his own net on 12 minutes. This seem to set an overall tone for the afternoon.

Totton did have a couple of chances early with Bennett forcing Thatcham stand in keeper Curtis Angell to push over a header from a right wing corner and Ollie Bradley trying a spectacular shot from 35 yards that went over.

Thatcham’s Scott Rees dragged a shot wide and striker Kyle Tooze pulled a save out of Shane Murphy. Totton’s makeshift back four was certainly looking a little shaky at times.

Totton then had a couple of chances with Allen having a header saved by Angell and Bennett also seeing an effort saved by him too.

Thatcham added a 2nd goal on 29 minutes with Tooze smashing home at the back post following a right wing cross.

Thatcham then added a 3rd when Ollie Bradley was adjudged to have fouled Adam Kelly in the box and YES Totton had conceded yet another penalty! There has been FOUR penalties given against Louis Langdown’s side in the last FIVE games and in truth all of them have been soft to say the least! On this occasion though Shane Murphy was unable to save the Stags because Rees stepped up to stick the ball to the right of Murphy and it was 3-0 to the visitors.

Half Time: AFC Totton 0 Thatcham Town 3

The 2nd half saw Totton create very little indeed with their only shot at goal coming from Ollie Bradley in added time!

Thatcham could have increased their lead further on a few occasions with chances for Cooper-Clark who had a free header off target, Jordan Williams had a low drive that hit the post and Rees had a low shot go just wide.

In truth the 2nd half was really poor from Totton and the 285 loyal supporters were probably left thinking that they could have been doing something else in the beautiful sunshine other than watching this!

It was such a shame to see that Stags finish their home fixtures with such a limp display. Let’s not forget that We have scored five at home on four occasions since Christmas and also scored four at home to Bideford. The fact is that when the Stags have everyone available they are a match for most sides in this division, but when you are missing four or five good players from a squad of fifteen players then there is a fair chance you will struggle, especially when some of the team who remain have an off day like today.

Let’s hope the players who are available can show some real determination for Saturdays final league game at Mangotsfield United, we cannot allow this season to go out on a whimper.
