TOTTON TOUGH OUT TIVERTON TEST

AFC Totton continued their promotion push with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Tiverton Town.

In the first game played at the Ian Moorcroft Stadium for 42 days, the two teams struggled for fluency on a very heavy surface that necessitated an aerial approach from both sides. Tiverton took the lead in the fifth minute when on-loan striker Alex FLETCHER found a pocket of space in the area, took an immaculate touch and finished neatly into the bottom corner.

Totton took a while to adjust as both sides played out a territorial tussle, but improved as the half wore on and produced a moment of quality to equalise. Tiverton were caught uncharacteristically high on a Totton counter, and Matty Burrows played a beautifully weighted through ball for Tony LEE, who finished his opportunity nervelessly.

The visitors looked to continue their momentum into the second half, and took the lead from a set-piece. A corner was swung to the back post where Joe OASTLER was waiting to apply the finishing touch past Zak Baker.

The goal allowed the Stags to stay in shape and look for counter-attacking opportunities, as Tivvy continued the overhead onslaught to find a way through, but a resolute away defence was equal to everything their hosts could throw at them. When the final whistle blew, the sense of relief was clear after an exhausting game for both players and fans.
