STAGS STAMP AUTHORITY OVER WIMBORNE TO RETAKE TOP SPOT

UNDER THE LIGHTS at the Snows Stadium AFC Totton put on a perfect display, beating Wimborne Town 4-0.

Tony Lee opened the scoring in the 21st minute and just five minutes later, Charlie Austin doubled The Stags’ advantage against The Magpies.

Tom Blair then scored a screamer thirteen minutes into the second half and Tony Lee pounced on a mistake from Charlie Philpot to seal the deal.

With the rain battering down at kick-off, excitement was in the air of the 1,244 people in attendance and the rain wasn’t going to dampen their moods.

Wimborne came closest to scoring first when they hit the post on the 13th minute from a clever corner routine.

Blair then took aim for the top corner from the left channel, but it flew narrowly wide of the post.

Tony LEE broke the deadlock for Totton after a deep cross found Scott Rendell, and he laid the ball off to Dec Rose at the right-wing byline. Rose’s short pass infield picked out Lee whose first attempt rebounded back to him for a second bite of the cherry and he smashed it home at the near post.

Just five minutes later, Charlie AUSTIN doubled the home side’s lead after a beautiful Rose pass carved open the Magpies and the striker rounded the ‘keeper to score his second goal in as many games.

The rest of the first half stagnated, and the Stags went into the break two goals to the good.

Wimborne came out for the second half eager to pressure the Totton backline but the defence held firm, before a moment of magic came up the other end of the pitch. Tom BLAIR cut inside onto his right foot and from about 25-yards out, fired a rocket towards the top corner that flew in off the underside of the crossbar.

The visitors protested that Matty Burrows had been elbowed by Blair, but the referee saw nothing wrong.

In the 66th minute Philpot, attempting to spray the ball out wide, miskicked and it went straight to Tony LEE, who delicately chipped the ball over the Wimborne ‘keeper for Totton’s fourth goal of the night.

And it almost became five when an in-swinging corner from the left found Oastler’s head at the near post, but Philpot saved smartly.

Four goals for Totton and three points sent them back to the top of the table. Wimborne remain in 10th place.
