Memories of AFC Totton v Saints from 10 years ago!

Memories of AFC Totton v Saints from 10 years ago!

Who remembers the day when the Stags entertained Saints in a Pre Season friendly? It was 10 years ago almost to the day that the Stags held Southampton to a 2-2 draw at our then home of Testwood Park. The game was played in front of a bumper crowd of well over 2.000 spectators.

Saints were of course in League One back then, after some very difficult years that saw them suffer two relegation’s in four seasons. Sadly it ended with the club being put into administration. As we all know a certain Markus Liebherr came to the rescue of Saints and the announcement came on the very day that the Stags were playing Saints! Many fans may remember that BBC South’s Tony Husband did the South Today Sports bulletin live from the Testwood Park pitch, when he formally announced that the takeover was complete!

It was all very exciting for everybody at AFC Totton and of course at St Mary’s, As we know many AFC Totton fans have a love for both clubs, including me! For those of us who were involved in AFC Totton at the time, it was all very hectic, but well worth it. Stuart Ritchie’s side did brilliantly well to snatch a 2-2 draw against Mark Wotte’s Saints, coming back from 2-0 down.

Ironically, the current day Stags kick off their Pre-Season with a game played behind closed doors at Staplewood against Saints U23’s tomorrow evening (Tuesday 9th July 7pm). Louis Langdown’s young and new look side will be looking to blow away any remaining cobwebs in what will┬ábe a very tough test for the Stags against top quality opposition.

The club will do their very best to get some updates on twitter during the game and we will try to get a mini report on the website later tomorrow evening.
