Stags honour former chairman Andy Straker.
AFC Totton yesterday honoured former chairman Andy Straker by naming yesterdays Pre-Season fixture v Birmingham City’s U23’s ‘The Andy Straker memorial game’. There were around 40 of Andy’s family & friends present at the game where one minutes applause were held prior to kick off to remember him.
After the game a ceremony was held in front of Andy’s family, friends and Stags supporters where the the club unveiled a new name for the clubs former ‘Stag bar’, the bar is now called ‘Strakers bar’!
A plaque was also unveiled just outside the entrance to the bar in honour of Andy.
Andy passed away in March at the age of just 51 following a two year battle against a brain tumour. Andy played a massive part in steering the club away from almost certain bankruptcy with debts totaling around £200.000. Andy was a shrewd negotiator, a skill that he used most days of his life in his job as a trade Union organiser for UNISON. He brought those skills with him to AFC Totton where they were needed when dealing with the problems facing the club at that time.
Now thanks to current chairman Wayne Mew and Vice Chairman Dave Penny Andy’s name is ‘up there’ for all to see forever. He will never be forgotten for what he did here and rightly so!!!
