YOUNG STAGS SCORE FIVE IN LEAGUE CUP WIN AT BROCKENHURST

U18’s Hampshire County Youth League Cup – 2nd Round

Brockenhurst 2-5 AFC Totton

The young Stags booked their place in the Quarter Finals of the League Cup, with a convincing victory away at Brockenhurst. Totton started strongly and almost took the lead with only 5 minutes gone. Matt Wotton broke through the defence and cut the ball back to Josh Carey, whose shot from the edge of the box was saved by the keeper. On 17 minutes Totton again went close when Matt Wotton found James Matthews on the right. He cut the ball back from the by-line to Shahram Jalal, who saw his shot saved.

On 21 minutes, a rare breakaway and shot on goal from Brockenhurst saw keeper Oscar Clark diving at full stretch to turn the ball behind for a corner. With 28 minutes gone, Totton took a deserved lead when Matt Wotton found James Matthews on the right. His ball into the box was headed back to Jack Diaper who rifled home from 10 yards out.

Totton continued to press forward and doubled their lead after 36 minutes. Jack Diaper passed to James Matthews who beat two men and crossed for Josh Carey to fire home from 12 yards out. On 42 minutes, Josh Carey was on the end of a Jack Diaper cross, but he saw his effort hit the crossbar.

Half Time: Brockenhurst 0-2 AFC Totton

3 minutes after the break, Totton made it 3-0 when Josh Carey ran on to a Jack Diaper through ball and fired past the advancing keeper. On 61 minutes Brockenhurst pulled a goal back when they broke down the right, cut inside and beat Oscar Clark at the near post.

Totton almost responded within minutes of conceding, when Jack Diaper’s free kick to the far post was headed against the crossbar by Ben Pike. On 75 minutes, a break down the right ended with Sam Richardson cutting inside and from the edge of the box, he shot just past the post. Brockenhurst scored a second after 78 minutes from a shot just inside the penalty area.

Totton continued to press forward and made it 4-2 on 83 minutes. Harry Edmondson’s pass from inside the centre circle picked out James Matthews on the left. He cut inside and from just outside the box, hit his shot past the keeper.

After 89 minutes Luke Betteridge raced forward and played a diagonal pass into the box, where Sam Richardson arrived and knocked the ball home to make the final score 5-2.
