Two teams, one Wednesday-morning training session and a welcome for anyone who wants to play — whether that’s league football or simply a weekly kick-about.
AFC Totton have two Pan Disability teams, run in partnership with the care company Dimensions. In the league they are known as AFC Totton Dimensions A and B, and they play in the Southern Inclusive Football League. Players are drawn from Dimensions, other local care companies and from across the local area.
The teams are managed and coached by Ian Knight, alongside Mike Garner and Owen Dench. Matchdays are on the first Sunday of the month at Oasis Academy Mayfield, from October through to June, with each team playing three competitive matches.
Not everyone who trains wants to play in the teams — and that’s OK. Some just want to enjoy a kick-about on a Wednesday morning. There’s no pressure to play in the teams, but if you want to, the coaches will try to accommodate you.
The A team lost just one game all season to win the Championship League — and were presented with the trophy by Jimmy Ball before a home match against Dagenham & Redbridge. Promoted to the Premier League, they made a flying start. The B team now play in League One.
Everyone who comes to training pays £3 a week, which goes towards the running costs of the two teams — the teams buy their own kit, equipment and match fees, and finish every season with a presentation night.
Ian, Mike and Owen take great pleasure in helping people play football, whether in a team or just at training — building self-confidence and ability along the way. New players are always welcome.
