AFC TOTTON WALKING FOOTBALL · TUESDAYS & FRIDAYS

Slower pace. Same passion.

Walking football is football without the running — much like 5-a-side, without the physical demands. Open, friendly, mixed sessions every Tuesday and Friday morning at the Snows Stadium. Legends never run.

What is walking football?

Created in 2011, walking football keeps the game going for everyone — whatever your age or fitness.

Walking football is a unique amateur sport. It plays much like 5-a-side, but without the physical demands of regular football — and, as the name suggests, there is no running. The main rules:

  • No running or jogging, on or off the ball
  • No physical contact
  • The ball stays below head height
  • No heading
  • No slide tackling
  • No tackling from behind
  • All free-kicks are indirect
  • Defenders stand 3 metres from free-kicks
  • One step only before a free-kick or penalty
  • Shin pads must be worn by all players

Who can play?

Walking football was created to promote the physical and mental well-being of the over-50s, and it has since grown into a brilliant way for people of any age with health conditions — or recovering from injury — to keep playing. At AFC Totton we run an open session with mixed teams of all ages.

Why play?

BODY · MIND · COMMUNITY

Mental health

Exercise helps the body produce dopamine — the happy hormone. Our players report real personal reward and satisfaction from every session.

Physical health

Walking football is proven to improve health — reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke, and helping posture, balance, reactions, blood pressure, cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.

Social life

Social circles can shrink as we get older. Walking football is an active, welcoming community — build friendships and widen your circle.

A sense of purpose

Community is at the heart of AFC Totton. Come and build purpose into your exercise and your week.

Getting started

You may not have kicked a football in years, let alone worn a full kit — don’t worry. Wear whatever you’re comfortable in (within reason): loose-fitting shorts, a t-shirt and trainers are perfect, though a pair of football shoes might give you a competitive edge.

The one thing we insist on is shin pads — an extra layer of protection that keeps the risk of injury down even further.
