Enable Ability is a long-established and highly respected charity, now proudly in its 75th year, supporting children, young people, and adults with disabilities across Portsmouth and South-East Hampshire.
Established in 1950 by a group of parents seeking support for their disabled children at a time when none existed, Enable Ability has grown into a leading provider of inclusive services that empower individuals and strengthen families.
We currently run 16 bespoke services that cater to a wide range of needs- supporting people with mild to moderate disabilities, as well as those with more complex and higher needs. Our programmes span all age groups, from early years to adulthood, and are designed to build confidence, promote independence, and develop key life skills through social, educational, and personal development opportunities. Families also benefit from vital respite, advice, and reassurance that their loved ones are receiving personalised, high-quality support in a safe and nurturing environment.
Amongst our most impactful services is Inter Activ, a pioneering employability programme for adults aged 17+ with disabilities. Inter Activ provides practical training, supported work experience, and skills development in a real-world environment- including within our community café. Based at Landport Community Centre, the service helps individuals move closer to paid or voluntary employment, while also boosting their self-esteem, independence, and sense of purpose. Since its launch, Inter Activ has supported over 110 individuals into work placements or employment.
In June, we launched a £50,000 Crowdfunder to secure the future of Inter Activ, and thanks to the incredible generosity of the community we’ve already made great progress. But, we still have a way to go to reach our target. Thanks to AFC Totton, we’re here at today’s match with a bucket collection.
