After tending to AFC Totton’s home pitch for the last three years, Gareth Abernethy will depart his role as Head Groundsman this summer.

The Northern Irishman, who studied Sports Turf Management at Greenmount Campus in County Antrim, was Senior Greenkeeper at Malone Golf Club in Belfast for six years, before moving to England to become a groundsman at Southampton Football Club in September 2016.

As part of the partnership between the Saints and AFC Totton, Gareth was appointed Head Groundsman at the Snows Stadium in August 2019.

Before the match against local rivals Sholing on Easter Monday, Vice-Chairman Dave Penny presented Gareth with an AFC Totton home shirt signed by the entire First Team squad as a token of appreciation for all of his hard work, dedicated to ensuring the Stags get to play on what is surely one of the finest playing surfaces in non-league football.

As Gareth now moves on to pastures new, everyone at AFC Totton thanks him for his service to the Club and wishes him well for the future.
