AFC Stoneham v AFC Totton – Hampshire Senior Cup 2nd round preview
Tomorrow evening (Wednesday 7th October) the Stags are back in action, when they face AFC Stoneham in the 2nd round of the Hampshire Senior Cup at the Elliott’s Arena (7.45pm).
The Stags manager Steve Hollick told the Stags website in his post Tiverton interview “I will be taking the first team squad. I may rest one or two players, but I am definitely taking the competition seriously. It’s a good competition and the club has done well in it in the past, having won it twice”.
Hollick will be eager for his side to get back to winning ways after Saturdays disappointing 2-0 loss at Ladysmead in the FA Trophy. The Stags boss was a little disappointed with the showing in that game and he will feel that there are things that need working on when they face Stoneham.
Wednesdays game won’t be easy for the Stags as AFC Stoneham are adapting well to their first ever season as a Sydenhams (Wessex) League Division One club. They have won three, drawn two and lost three of their eight league games so far, and they currently sit in mid table in their division. Stoneham have already had to negotiate their way through the first round of the Hants Senior Cup by beating Andover New Street 2-1.
As Steve Hollick pointed out, this is a competition that the Stags have won twice, winning it in 2010 (4-0 v Aldershot at Dean Court) & 2011 (3-1 v Sholing at St Mary’s) The Stags also reached the final in 2012 where they lost (0-2 v Eastliegh).at St Mary’s. Let’s hope that the Stags can take one step towards repeating those feats of a few years ago.
