THE STAGS ARE BACK at home in the Southern League Premier Division South and one next match will be against to Hanwell Town, so let’s find out a bit about our opponents…
THE BASICS
Hanwell Town Football Club are a semi-professional football club representing Hanwell, but currently playing in Perivale in the London Borough of Ealing. They were the London Spartan League Senior Division Champions in 1983 and the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Champions in 2014.
The club is affiliated to the Middlesex County Football Association. It was formed in 1920 by a group of natives of Newcastle-upon-Tyne who were working in the Hanwell area, who adopted the famous black and white stripes of Newcastle United as their colours. They played in the London League during the 1920s but dropped down to more local leagues after World War II, where they remained for more than twenty years.
HAVE THEY GENERALLY BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN THE LEAGUE?
At the end of the 2017/18 season, as a result of structural changes by the FA to Step 4 of the non-league pyramid, the club was moved laterally to the Isthmian League South Central Division.
In 2021/22, Hanwell were promoted after beating Chertsey Town 3-2 after extra-time to win the Isthmian South Central Division Promotion Play-Off Final. It meant that Hanwell play Step 3 football for the first time in their history in 2022/23.
HOW DID THEY GET ON LAST SEASON?
Hanwell finished 14th in the Southern League Premier Division South last season, achieving 50 points from 42 games. While their Goals For tally of 55 matches the teams immediately around them, their defensive record was one better than Swindon Supermarine, who finished one place outside the Play-Off zone.
HAVE AFC TOTTON PLAYED THEM RECENTLY?
AFC Totton has no record of ever playing Hanwell Town before the 1980s when a lot of club records and archives were destroyed, so it looks like a first meeting between the clubs.
DO WE HAVE CURRENT OR FORMER PLAYERS IN COMMON?
None that we know of – but do get in touch if you become aware of any players who have represented both clubs.
WHO IS THEIR MANAGER NOW?
In May 2022, joint-manager Wayne Carter left Hanwell to take up the manager's position at Isthmian South Central side Chertsey Town – leaving Chris Moore in sole charge.
Striker Moore had racked up more than 250 non-league appearances and 106 goals during spells with Uxbridge, Northwood and Dagenham & Redbridge, before being signed by then-Brentford boss Leroy Rosenior, using money won on the cub’s behalf by a fan in a Coca-Cola ‘Win a Player’ competition. Moore scored the only goal of the game to ensure his League One debut was a winning one, at Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium. He returned to Dagenham the following season and enjoyed a successful non-league career thereafter, which ended at Hanwell Town. He was capped by the Wales ‘C’ team on seven occasions, scoring four goals.
Moore managed Egham Town in 2017/18, before being dismissed in January 2018 together with his assistant, Carter. The two were appointed at Hanwell later that year.
WHEN AND WHERE IS THE GAME?
The match takes place at Snows Stadium, Salisbury Road, Totton SO40 2RW on Saturday 26 August – Kick-Off at 3:00pm.
