It’s been just a month since our last encounter with the Robins at the Snows Stadium, when the draw for the 1st Round proper of the Buildbase FA Trophy bumped tonight’s league fixture out of the way in favour of an epic cup tie that had everything including goals, three red cards and a penalty shoot-out.
The Stags kept their nerve and – thanks to the helping hand of goalkeeper Amadeusz Skrzyniarz – finally got the job done with Jack Hoey’s winning spot-kick.
But while AFC Totton have since dipped in and out of cup football, top of the table Frome Town have had the opportunity to concentrate on their bid for the Southern League Div.1 South title and, of course, promotion to the Southern League Premier.
A goal from ex-Stag Jonathan Davies was enough to take all 3 points at home to Plymouth Parkway but the Robins followed that up by suffering their first league defeat of the season at midtable Highworth Town, and they dropped further points at struggling Bideford just three days later.
Normal service was soon resumed at their Badgers Hill home, though, with a 3-0 defeat of Mangotsfield United, before notching an impressive 4-1 away win at Evesham United courtesy of two goals each for striker Kane Simpson and James Ollis.
That brace took Simpson to 11 league goals for the season, the same number as our very own Hisham Kasimu, making them the joint 4th-highest goalscorers in the division. And, like Hish, Simpson added another to his tally this past weekend with the opener in the Robins' 3-0 home win over Willand Rovers which, courtesy of Totton's dropped points at home to Paulton Rovers, puts them 9 points clear of the Stags going into this crucial match.
