Testwood Lakes Sailability (TLS) runs from the 4th Eling Sea Scout HQ in Totton on Mondays (excluding bank holidays) and Thursdays, April to October.
They offer supervised dinghy sailing for anyone aged 8+ with any disability. The site includes a wheelchair-accessible pontoon with hoists, and specially designed dinghies which have positive buoyancy for added safety.
Some of the sailors just want to be taken out for a sail by one of the experienced dinghy sailors. However, there are those who want to learn to sail and the image to the left is of twins who progressed during 2023 to receiving their Bronze Certificates. We also have several groups who sail with TLS such as Headway Southampton based in Totton. Some of their service users have developed their skills so they can now sail alone.
Some customers reach the heights of a Platinum Certificate with one sailor becoming a volunteer who now takes people sailing.
Some sailors simply enjoy being taken out by experienced volunteers, while others learn to sail. In 2023, a pair of twins earned their Bronze Certificates, and groups like Headway Southampton regularly sail with some members proficient now to sail independently. A few even achieved Platinum level, with one sailor becoming a volunteer who now helps others experience sailing.
Sailability fully runs with volunteers and always welcomes new helpers, not just for sailing! Roles include reception, assisting sailors, making tea, moving furniture, setting up tents, helping sailors in and out of dinghies, ensuring safety, and supporting on-water activities like sailing and safety boats.
