Stags’ strike force fire five past Wimborne

Attendance – 135

TWO goals a piece from in-form Nick Watts and Michael Gosney and a thirteenth goal of the season for Nathaniel Sherborne ensured an unbeaten five game run for AFC Totton, beating local rivals Wimborne Town 5-2 last night, 13th January 2016.

Goals didn’t take long to start flooding in, as in the seventh minute, Sherborne put Watts straight through on goal, leaving the winger to calmly slot the ball through goalkeeper Shane Murphy’s legs.

The Dorset side may have felt slightly hard done by to go two goals down just three minutes later, as Sherborne back-heeled the ball towards the goal after a dangerous swinging corner and appeared to land on the line before being cleared by Wimborne’s Declan Randall, but referee Martin Underhay had already blown for the goal.

And the Stags were far from done in the first half – Dylan Knight produced a gorgeous lay off to leave Gosney in clean air to fire in a shot from outside the box. Murphy got a hand to the sweet strike, but couldn’t prevent the ball from finding the bottom corner of the net to make it 3-0 after just half an hour.

Gosney picked up his second of the game with five minutes of the half remaining. Neil Williams stroked a sublime cross to the other side of the pitch, where the Totton striker smashed it inside the near post and a frustrated Murphy.

Wimborne did break the Stags’ defence before the half time whistle. Forward, James Stokoe, put his laces through the ball and fired into the bottom corner from 12 yards out, to make the score at the break 4-1.

Totton had done the majority of the damage in the first half, breaking Wimborne’s spirit early on, and a training-style free kick would be the last goal for the away side. Gosney took it quickly, passing to Watts, who, once again, found the inside corner at the near post to finish the scoring for the Stags.

Mark Ford did give Wimborne some credibility after a stunning chip over Mowthorpe, but Wimborne could never get themselves back into the game after such a demoralising start. Totton find themselves with 13 out of a possible 15 points and will be hoping to continue their best run of the season away to Yate Town this coming Saturday.
