Newly appointed AFC Totton manager Glenn Howes told the Non League Paper that it was the clubs ‘vision and ambition’ that enticed him to the Snows Stadium, after he drew the curtain on his hugely successful reign at Blackfield & Langley. Joining Howes at the Snows Stadium will be his assistant from Gang Warilly James Wood and his goalkeeping coach Henry Howes, who is Glenns brother.
Howes took the Watersiders from Step five to Step three after back to back promotions in 2017/18 and 2018/19. They won the Wessex Premier League championship, then followed it up by winning the Southern League Division One title.
Howes, who turned 38 yesterday believes that the time is right for the next step in his managerial career. Howes told the NLP “I could see from their vision and objectives over the next two or three years, that they were extremely ambitious”. Howes went on to say “The facilities and infrastructure is in place and I just feel I can help and assist alongside James and Henry”.
Howes told the NLP ” I remember watching AFC Totton on TV in the FA Cup a few years back and they are eager to have those sort of days again. It’s certainly on the agenda to raise the profile and hopefully climb the non league ladder. However, its difficult to say that we want to get to the National League South, or the Southern Premier. First and foremost we have to concentrate on Step 4”.
The former midfielder who played for Eastleigh, Basingstoke Town, Farnborough and Poole Town, before a knee injury curtailed his playing career, admitted that he may look to recruit a few of his Watersiders players for his new club.
He said “It’s quite common in Non League football for managers to sign players who have played under them previously at other clubs, so perhaps that can happen here”. Howes added “I have been overwhelmed by the response from the players who have previously played under us”. “There will have to be negotiations and discussions with those, as there will be with the current Totton players”.
Howes finished by saying ” In time we can build a team that can challenge in the upper echelons, that is the expectations and aspirations of the club”.
