Chesham United_400px.pngIT’S BEEN THAT KIND OF SEASON – just when Chesham United looked like running away with the Southern League Premier Division South title, Salisbury breathed new life into their own title bid by defeating The Generals 3-1 at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium on Saturday.

Nevertheless, Chesham remain 12 points clear at the top of the table, albeit having played one game more than both Salisbury and Gosport Borough, and three more than AFC Totton, who visit The Meadow on the edge of the Chilterns this weekend.

Totton triumphed on their most recent visit to the ground last April, although The Stags’ opponents that day were Berkhamsted in the Champion of Champions Super Cup, the two sides having won their respective Southern League Division One regional titles to qualify for the encounter. Ethan Taylor scored both goals in a 2-1 win that secured the second leg of Jimmy Ball’s eventual treble trophy haul for 2022/23.

When Chesham visited the Snows Stadium in early-December, first-half goals from their top scorer Ricardo German and Zak Joseph put The Generals in a commanding position by the break. But a Scott Rendell penalty six minutes into the second half and a Leon Maloney equaliser nine minutes from the end of the game saw The Stags battle their way back to a point.

Chesham have lost only twice since then, with Saturday’s loss at Salisbury adding to a 0-4 defeat at Plymouth Parkway on 16 December, with a run of 13 games unbeaten sandwiched in between. Their only home defeat of the league season so far was way back in September, when goals from ex-Stag Pip Nolan and Conor Lynch fired Winchester City to a 2-1 success. Chesham also went down to a 0-4 defeat at Bracknell Town on Saturday 11 November. They are currently the division’s leading goalscorers with 70 goals, while only Gosport Borough have conceded fewer – The Generals, 35; Boro’, 34.

Striker Ricardo German has 26 league goals to his name so far this season, which has him two ahead of Merthyr Town’s Ricardo Rees as the division’s leading marksman. Scott Rendell is 4th with 17 league goals, one behind Hungerford Town’s Conor McDonagh.
