Young wing wizard Matty Burrows announced himself with a bang on Saturday, taking just six minutes of his AFC Totton debut against Westbury United to open his goalscoring account for The Stags in their 5-3 Southern League Div.1 South victory.

Burrows followed his former Terras teammate Jack Seddon from National League South strugglers Weymouth in favour of a loan move to the Snows Stadium.

According to the Dorset Echo, Burrows, who is now 20 years-old, originally caught the eye with a number of impressive displays for Balti Sports in the Dorset Premier League, earning himself a move to Portland United in the Wessex Premier League.

Upon his arrival at the Bob Lucas Stadium, Sheffield-born Burrows was incorporated into Weymouth’s youth ranks, playing for their U19 and U23 teams. In the 2022/23 season so far, the pacey left winger has been a regular occupant of the Terras’ bench, coming on three times. He featured from the start of the second half at Bath City and was an unused substitute in Weymouth’s recent 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon in the 1st Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Burrows and Seddon are close friends. The young winger did not seek his mate’s counsel prior to agreeing to come to the Snows Stadium, but he admits knowing Seddon was already at the club was a significant factor is convincing him to make the move.

Asked about his ambitions for his stay with AFC Totton, which has the potential to be extended beyond its initial duration should it suit all parties, Burrows gives a thoughtful response:

“I like to set myself small, incremental targets – like, for example, to get in the team; then, to score a goal or provide an assist; to see to it that the team wins and gets all three points, etc. So, I might be setting myself brand new targets as the match goes on but if I keep achieving them, then I’m doing my job for the team.”

AFC Totton Manager Jimmy Ball said of the new signing:

“Matty is a player with exciting potential. He has pace to burn, excellent technique; he’s both creative and a good finisher. I think the fans will enjoy watching him play.”
